12/12/16 Harry Callahan

Harry Callahan was born in 1912 and did not start photography until he was 26 when he joined the Chrysler Photographic group. He had 2 mentors one was Lazlo Moholy Nagy who was the director of the Chicago Institute for design the other was Ansel Adams. From this unlikely duo, he fused 2 distinct aspects of the photo.

He continued to photograph for over 60 years for 15 of these his main model was his wife Eleanor.

His work was experimental with a passion for light and dark and unusual camera angles some from quite low down and he liked to walk around the town in the morning then subsequently process and look at the images in the afternoon.

What I find interesting is when you try to research Callahan there is not an awful l to find. I have 2 volumes which cover a number of photographers and he is not noted in either of them. and the web pages on him seemed to be on the brief side. Wikipedia had a paragraph and a bit.

However, in the vein of this particular module, we can see that his wife Eleanor was featured in his images and was aware the images were being taken and in some instances modified to change the look and feel. In some cases, there is the feeling of Moholy Nagy from the experimental nature of the images.
